Hook, Line, and Southern Minnesota: The Best Local Fishing Spots Near Mankato
If you know me at all, you know I’m not just the guy who helps protect your home and business. I’m also the guy who will talk fishing with you for hours if you let me.
So when I came back from a recent trip to Yellowstone country, fresh off catching Yellowstone cutthroat trout in Montana, we figured there was no better time to write a blog about something near and dear to my heart… fishing. And more specifically, fishing right here in Southern Minnesota.
Whether you're a lifelong angler or just looking for a reason to get outside this season, Southern Minnesota has some genuinely great spots to wet a line. Here are a few of our favorites.
1. The Whitewater River — Near St. Charles
For trout fishing, it doesn't get much better than the Whitewater River in Winona County near St. Charles. This is one of my go-to spots.
The Whitewater is one of Southern Minnesota's classic trout streams, winding through the scenic bluff country of the Driftless Area. It's the kind of spot that makes you feel like you're miles away from everything, even though you're just a short drive from Mankato!
Explore Minnesota highlights southern Minnesota as home to some of the state's most scenic and productive trout streams for fly fishing. Check out the
Minnesota DNR's trout stream regulations for Southeast Minnesota before you head out, as this area has specific seasonal rules.
2. The Root River — Near Lanesboro
Another one of my personal favorites is the Root River near Lanesboro. It’s a stunning stretch of water in the heart of bluff country. Known for excellent trout fishing, the Root River winds through some of the most picturesque landscapes in the state.
Lanesboro itself is a charming small town worth a visit on its own. You can grab lunch, stroll the trail, and then spend the afternoon casting for trout.
Fly fishing on the Root River in southern Minnesota's bluff country is described as spectacular.
Don't forget to pick up your trout stamp! You'll need it in addition to your standard fishing license. See
the DNR's regulations page for all the details.
3. Red Lake — Northern Minnesota (Worth the Drive!)
OK, this one is a little further north, but I wanted to give it a shoutout because the crappie fishing there has been really good lately.
Red Lake is one of Minnesota's largest lakes and a well-known destination for panfish, particularly crappies. If you're the type of angler who doesn't mind turning a fishing trip into a weekend getaway, Red Lake is absolutely worth it. Pack a cooler, bring the family, and enjoy one of Minnesota's most beloved fishing destinations.
4. The Minnesota River — Near Mankato & New Ulm
You don't have to go far for big fish. The Minnesota River, which flows right through our backyard, is a fantastic option for walleye and catfish.
Within 10 miles on
either side of New Ulm, the river produces large numbers of catfish and trophy walleye. Whether you're launching a boat near Mankato or finding a spot along the bank near New Ulm, this river has a lot to offer, and the scenery isn't too bad either!
The New Ulm area also has nearby Clear Lake and Lake Hanska, which local conservation efforts have turned into successful fishing destinations. The Cottonwood River, which flows through New Ulm, also holds smallmouth bass and northern pike if you're looking for variety.
5. Myre-Big Island State Park — Near Albert Lea
If you're looking for a beautiful state park setting combined with solid fishing, Myre-Big Island State Park near Albert Lea is a hidden gem in Southern Minnesota.
Situated on Albert Lea Lake, the park offers shore fishing and boat access for walleye, northern pike, bass, and panfish. It's a great spot to bring the whole family. Pack a picnic, hike the trails, and squeeze in a few hours of fishing.
6. Hiniker Pond — Mankato
For those who want to keep it close to home, Hiniker Pond, right in Mankato, is a surprisingly good local fishing spot, especially for a quick outing after work or on a Saturday morning.
Fishbrain users have noted Hiniker Pond as one of the top fishing spots in the Mankato area, offering a diverse array of species, including largemouth bass, northern pike, and panfish. It's accessible, easy to get to, and a great beginner-friendly option for kids or newcomers to fishing.
Don't Forget Your Fishing License!
Before you head out to any of these great spots, make sure you're properly licensed. In Minnesota, anyone 16 or older needs a valid fishing license. You'll also need a trout stamp if you plan to fish any trout stream, like the Whitewater or Root River.
Licenses are available online through the
Minnesota DNR licensing portal, and you can also purchase them by phone or at most sporting goods stores. Licenses run March 1 through the end of February the following year, so now is a great time to get yours for the season.
Plan Your Next Great Fishing Trip
