Some of the most magical memories of every holiday season are the quality family times! There are only a few times of year when we can all gather and truly enjoy one another.
If you are looking for some family fun this holiday season, why not take in the sights and sounds of area light displays? There is a quality assortment just a short drive away from (or even in) Mankato.
Kiwanis Holiday Lights, Mankato
When to go: November 28 to December 31; Sunday to Thursday 5:00-8:00 p.m., Fridays/Saturdays 5:00-10:00 p.m.
No list of holiday light tours would be complete without the Kiwanis Holiday Lights display in Mankato’s Sibley Park!
Whether you walk it, drive it, or take the bus, this display – created entirely by volunteers – is not to be missed. Special events, including visits from Santa himself, live reindeer, and opening parades, round out this perfect family holiday celebration.
Sever’s Holiday Lights, Shakopee
When to go: November 27 to December 28
With 2 miles of over 2.5 million lights, this drive-thru display at 3121 150th Street West in Shakopee will delight all ages! You can even bring the family’s furriest members along, as all guests are asked to remain in cars. In addition to the drivable course, food and drink vendors, and holiday music, this is a great stop on your holiday lights tour!
Spirit of Winter: Festival of Lights, Waconia
When to go: November 21 to December 31; Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday 4:00-8:00 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 4:00 to 9:00 p.m.
The Winery at Sovereign Estates brings families together with its Spirit of Winter: Festival of Lights in Waconia. Just an hour north of Mankato, this 20-mile course brings together synchronized holiday music across 20 acres of the winery’s lakefront property. This outdoor walking event features holiday foods, drinks, and even heated cabana rentals for those who don’t want to face the cold!
GLOW Holiday Festival, St. Paul
When to go: November 20 to January 4
Located at St. Paul’s CHS Field, this festival of lights is now in its sixth year. Make a getaway of it and spend the night in the city, with reservable ticket times on the hour from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. (The event closes nightly at 9:00 p.m. each night).
It won’t just be lights keeping all ages entertained, as the map also includes snowy sledding hills, fairy tale castles, a carousel, playgrounds, bonfires, and even a zip line, keeping everyone’s interest piqued.
Magic of Lights, Eagan
When to go: November 7 to January 3; Monday through Thursday, 5:30 to 9:00 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 5:30 to 10:00 p.m.
Viking Lakes plays host to a nationwide program called Magic of Lights, and our closest venue will be in Eagan. Cost to attend is by the carload for this drive-thru-only event.
With a holiday village, LED lights, and animations throughout the trail, all ages will enjoy this festive display. The festivities also feature a $10 discount on Wednesdays for First Responders.

As you prepare your own holiday displays, be sure to remember to keep things safe and sound at home. With just a few basic safety tips, you can be sure the holiday season stays merry and bright!
Here’s your checklist to keep in mind when decorating this season:
- Check all cords for any fraying or loose bulbs
- Check if the lights are intended for in- or outdoor use
- Do not overload outlets or power strips/cords
- Only utilize safe ladders that adequately reach your desired heights
- Keep cords dry and off the ground
- Never use staples, nails, or tacks to hang lights
